Las Vegas Art Museum - Las Vegas - U.S.A.
The Las Vegas Art Museum is dedicated to presenting works by emerging and internationally recognized contemporary artists. Recent exhibitions include a survey of Southern California Minimalists, including Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, and James Turrell; solo exhibitions by artists Michael Reafsnyder, Martin Mull, and Cindy Wright; a comprehensive survey of Roy Lichtenstein’s prints; an exhibition of models by the architect Frank Gehry; the three-dimensional paintings of Kaz Oshiro; and an exhibition curated by art critic Dave Hickey featuring artists who studied with him at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The origins of the Las Vegas Art Museum date back to 1950, when a small group of visionaries, dedicated to bringing fine art to Las Vegas, formed the Las Vegas Art League. In 1974, the Las Vegas Art League was renamed the Las Vegas Art Museum (LVAM), becoming the first fine art museum in the state of Nevada. LVAM relocated from Lorenzi Park to its present location in the Sahara West Library/Fine Art Museum building in 1997. In this new facility, LVAM built a schedule of community-based shows, including exhibitions by local Las Vegas artists and Museum members, as well as showcase exhibitions of a variety of types and styles, including exhibitions of works by Dale Chihuly, Sam Francis, and August Rodin. The Museum features nearly 8,000 square feet of exhibition space, and offers adult and children’s education programs.

In January 2006, LVAM’s Board of Trustees reformulated the Museum’s mission and goals to adhere to the highest standards of museum practices and focus of the Museum’s exhibitions and collections programs on contemporary fine art and design. Subsequent to the change, LVAM has attracted greater numbers of regular visitors and a more diversified demographic than ever before. The nucleus of a heritage collection of art has been formed, and the Museum’s education programs for children and adults have been recognized by the Nevada Arts Council for excellence.

Art 40 Basel - Basel - Suisse

The world's premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works, Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. More than 2,000 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars, are represented in the show's multiple sections. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works.

60,000 people attended Art 39 Basel, the last edition of this favorite rendezvous for the global artworld, including art collectors, art dealers, artists, curators and other art enthusiasts. The New York Times has called Art Basel the «Olympics of the Art World.» Le Monde named Art Basel «La meilleure foire du monde» («The best fair in the world»), and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung observed «Die beste Kunst ist gerade gut genug» («The best art is barely good enough»).

With its world-class museums, outdoor sculptures, theaters, concert halls, idyllic medieval old town and new buildings by leading architects, Basel ranks as a culture capital, and that cultural richness helps put the Art Basel week on the agenda for art lovers from all over the globe. During Art Basel, a fascinating atmosphere fills this traditional city, as the international art show is reinforced with exhibitions and events all over the region.

Located on the banks of the Rhine, at the border between Switzerland, France and Germany, Basel is easily navigated by foot and trams.

In 1959 the Academy received its name and current functions, since which date it has continuously adjusted its sphere of activities to the changes — and at times the upheavals — undergone by countries overseas.
For several decades the activities of the Academy concentrated essentially on Africa, to which it has remained traditionally attached. Nevertheless, over recent years it has diversified its focus of attention and the Academy has gained a more international character by forging bonds with a wide range of scientific organisations, as witnessed by the co-operation agreements signed with UNESCO, the "Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen" (The Royal Institute for the Tropics — The Netherlands), the "Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical" (the Institute for Tropical Hygiene and Medicine) and the "Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical" (The Institute for Tropical Scientific Investigation) (Portugal), the "Third World Academy of Sciences" (Italy), the "Chinese Academy of Sciences" (China) and the "Academia Nacional de Ciencias" (The National Academy of Sciences — Bolivia).
The Academy also takes an interest in knowledge about the past and prides itself on its role in maintaining the memory of the past in the light of the present, including the colonial period during which it was founded.
In fact, it was under the name of "Institut Royal Colonial Belge" (Royal Belgian Colonial Institute) that the present Academy was founded in 1928 and inaugurated in 1929 by the Minister, Henri Jaspar. At that time the area over which it carried out its mandate was restricted exclusively to the Belgian Congo. In 1931 the Institute gained greater liberty of action, thanks to its civil status which subsumes an autonomous existence, the ownership of a patrimonium and the possibility to receive gifts and legacies.
Renamed as the "Royal Academy of Colonial Sciences" in 1954, our Institution changed its name to the present "Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences" in 1959.
