Tentoonstelling van de week - Exposition de la semaine - Exhibition of the week
'The Collector's Eye' - Museum Würth - Künzelsau - Deutschland
»The Collector’s Eye« the latest Museum Würth exhibition, is devoted to multifarious developments in the Würth Collection. It features a selection of recent acquisitions made during the past three years as the result of discussions between the collector, Reinhold Würth, and his Art Advisory Committee. The diversity and quality of the works reflect an attempt to close gaps in the collection by acquiring major specimens by recognized classics – such as Max Ernst, Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Rufino Tamayo – and at the same time to institute and encourage a vital exchange between the art of the recent past and the present day. On the one hand, works by important protagonists of the international art scene come into their own right – including Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Alex Katz, Anthony Caro, and Tony Cragg, who have remained consistently creative over a long time period and still play a seminal role in contemporary developments. On the other hand, current media-related approaches are taken into account, such as that of Tony Oursler, who envisages a complete reformulation of the contemporary visual language. Also on view are works by the temporary, hybrid artist duo Bill Woodrow and Richard Deacon, whose virtually alchemistic sculpture installations not only explore the material aspects of the work of art but play on the verbal level of art perception.

A total of about 100 works have been brought together for the exhibition – from paintings and prints through sculpture and video works – to form an extraordinarily diverse and exciting selection. Our recent acquisitions are covered even more comprehensively in the accompanying catalogue, which includes about 120 works all told.

Each of these works sheds light on the continually developing collection process, reflected in the exhibition by juxtapositions of selected individual approaches. In an interplay with the previous collection and its existing stocks, the recent acquisitions will find their firm place and add new accents to the inimitable profile of the Würth Collection

Guggenheim New York - New York - U.S.A
An internationally renowned art museum and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century, the Guggenheim Museum is at once a vital cultural center, an educational institution, and the heart of an international network of museums. Visitors can experience special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, lectures by artists and critics, performances and film screenings, classes for teens and adults, and daily tours of the galleries led by experienced docents. Founded on a collection of early modern masterpieces, the Guggenheim Museum today is an ever-growing institution devoted to the art of the 20th century and beyond.

In June 1943, Frank Lloyd Wright received a letter from Hilla Rebay, the art advisor to Solomon R. Guggenheim, asking the architect to design a new building to house Guggenheim's four-year-old Museum of Non-Objective Painting. The project evolved into a complex struggle pitting the architect against his clients, city officials, the art world, and public opinion. Both Guggenheim and Wright would die before the building's 1959 completion. The resultant achievement, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, testifies not only to Wright's architectural genius, but to the adventurous spirit that characterized its founders.
Wright made no secret of his disenchantment with Guggenheim's choice of New York for his museum: "I can think of several more desirable places in the world to build his great museum," Wright wrote in 1949 to Arthur Holden, "but we will have to try New York." To Wright, the city was overbuilt, overpopulated, and lacked architectural merit.
Still, he proceeded with his client's wishes, considering locations on 36th Street, 54th Street, and Park Avenue (all in Manhattan), as well as in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, before settling on the present site on Fifth Avenue between 88th and 89th Streets. Its proximity to Central Park was key; as close to nature as one gets in New York, the park afforded relief from the noise and congestion of the city.
Nature not only provided the museum with a respite from New York's distractions but also leant it inspiration. The Guggenheim Museum is an embodiment of Wright's attempts to render the inherent plasticity of organic forms in architecture. His inverted ziggurat (a stepped or winding pyramidal temple of Babylonian origin) dispensed with the conventional approach to museum design, which led visitors through a series of interconnected rooms and forced them to retrace their steps when exiting. Instead, Wright whisked people to the top of the building via elevator, and led them downward at a leisurely pace on the gentle slope of a continuous ramp. The galleries were divided like the membranes in citrus fruit, with self-contained yet interdependent sections. The open rotunda afforded viewers the unique possibility of seeing several bays of work on different levels simultaneously. The spiral design recalled a nautilus shell, with continuous spaces flowing freely one into another.

Kunstbeurs van de week - Foire d'art de la semaine - Art Fair of the week
Art Santa Fe - Santa Fe - U.S.A.

Much of Santa Fe’s eminent status as an international contemporary art destination is due to the annual occurrence of ART Santa Fe, which boasted record–breaking attendance in July of 2008.

International galleries mixed with U.S. galleries created a powerful collection of art from all over the world. Asian art was of particular interest for many. Carrie Clyne of China Square Gallery (New York and Beijing) describes her time at ART Santa Fe as “successful…. People showed interest in Chinese art and I made great contacts with curators, critics and collectors. Special interest was generated by Shen Jingdong’s brightly colored toy-like soldiers in the triptych Navy/Army/Air force that we displayed.”
Brad and Rattana Gordon from Teo + Namfah Gallery of Bangkok state that they “received positive feedback…from a wide range of people, including collectors, art consultants and curators, as well as the general public.
Exhibitor Rebecca Hossack of London affirmed, “We absolutely loved doing the fair. We met some terrific clients last summer who returned again this year and have become long-term friends of the gallery.”
The Project Spaces have proven to be a dynamic element of the annual event. Canadian installation artists Daniel Borins and Jennifer Marman have achieved great success exhibiting and selling their work in the United States. Borins finds that “ART Santa Fe continues to grow and so do its exhibitors.” Curator, Hollis Walker declares, “ART Santa Fe just keeps getting better and better.” She presented Furies in collaboration with eight women artists.
As for collectors themselves, Joel and Ann Berson of New York had this to say about ART Santa Fe: “It was very positive for us to meet dealers in person. It’s part of the whole process of collecting. There was a universal quality, a sense of being part of the global art world. We will certainly be returning next year.” Collector Keith Fallis found “a wonderfully diverse and truly remarkable assemblage of exquisite work running the gamut of styles” at ART Santa Fe. Continues Fallis, “With unique representation from Thailand to Argentina, one was hard-pressed to leave without finding an ideal match for his or her personal tastes and esthetics.”
High-tech art formats contributed to the excitement of ART Santa Fe. Keep Adding, a collaborative team of new-media artists, presented the site-specific installation Gradient Ghosts I in the entry lobby to the fair. Visitors to ART Santa Fe were greeted by the artists’ painting, roughly 10 by 23 feet, composed of shades of purple and blue with pink. Hidden LED light boxes cast dense, digital drawings upon the painting’s surface.
ART Santa Fe 2008 was covered by Vernissage TV, a Basel, Switzerland-based web site that covers art events around the globe. See www.artsantafe.com, Vernissage TV’s link for coverage of this year’s fair, as well as Art in America magazine’s second annual cocktail party, hosted this year at Zane Bennett Contemporary Art. On Saturday evening of the fair weekend, Dean Sobel, director of Denver’s new Clyfford Still Museum, was the keynote speaker, part of an ongoing series of lectures and discussions by major art-world contributors presented by ART Santa Fe Presents, a not-for-profit organization for public outreach. William Siegal hosted a post-lecture champagne reception at his gallery in the Railyard Art District.
Museum groups included the Art Institute of Chicago, the El Paso Museum of Art, and Friends of Contemporary Art, the fund-raising arm of the New Mexico Museum of Art. Groups visiting from Denver and Los Angeles reported that their experience at ART Santa Fe was on a par with Art Basel.

ART Santa Fe 2009 will take place July 23 through 26. Contact press (at) artsantafe (dot) com or call 505.988.8883 for details.
