Elmgreen & Draget: 2020The exhibition, entitled 2020 and consisting of a large selection of Elmgreen & Dragset’s sculptures, both new and familiar, is staged into a fictional environment, which generates new sets of narratives and enables visitors to make their own stories and associations. Running through the presentation of works is an underlying concern for the loss of togetherness in a culture that emphasises the individual. As an exhibition, 2020 may make you, the viewer, feel completely lost. Have we finally reached a juncture where we will have to take stock of the way we lead our lives?

Michael Elmgreen (b. 1961 in Copenhagen, Denmark) and Ingar Dragset (b. 1969 in Trondheim, Norway) have been working together since 1995. In their art, they address social concerns and reveal power structures embedded in our culture in a subversive, yet playful manner. The artist duo’s is in Berlin.

Helsinki – Finnish Museum of Photography – 20/08/2020 – 20/12/2020

Douglas Kirkland: Coco & Marilyn – The Finnish Museum of Photography’s new exhibition space, named K1, will be opened with an inaugural showcase, featuring two exhibitions in one — Coco Chanel and An Evening with Marilyn — from Canadian photographer Douglas Kirkland (b. 1934). The photographs depict two iconic women who developed a deep understanding of the power of vision and gaze.

Kirkland photographed Marilyn Monroe and Coco Chanel in the early 1960s while working at Look magazine. The images from six decades in the past deliver a dose of the Hollywood starlet cult and the history of fashion. Viewed today, the works offer a direct view into the early heyday of photography as a central feature of modern consumer culture. The exhibition also explores the life cycles of cultural icons, and the raw power of photography.

Douglas Kirkland is a photographer with a long career in Hollywood, known mainly for shooting renowned stars. He has also worked on more than 150 feature film productions.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration wirh Photo Op. K1’s main corporate partner is Tradeka.

Helsinki – Sinebrychoff Art Museum – 17/09/2020 – 10/01/2021

Tiepolo – Venice in the North – The fame of the Italian master Giovanni Battista (Giambattista) Tiepolo (1696−1770) spread across Europe early in the 18th century. He soon attracted the attention of great art collectors. Although Giovanni Battista Tiepolo never travelled to Russia or Scandinavia, his paintings did. It is a testimony to the strength of his art that his paintings, drawings and etchings enjoyed a continuous popularity on the art market all through the 19th century and well into the 20th century.

For the first time ever in Finland, the exhibition will bring together more than twenty oil paintings, drawings and etchings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his son Domenico. Masterpieces from important museum collections in Scandinavia, Russia, Great Britain and Italy will highlight the successful dissemination of the art of Tiepolo to the most northern parts of Europe. The exhibition focuses on people, events and the fascinating stories behind the art works.
